Nam Medic's Tour Of Duty

173d Airborne Brigade,
3/503rd.
E Co. Recon Platoon.
February 1970 - February 1971
Gaspar "Doc" Otero
My name is Gaspar Otero, I am
proud to have served with the 173rd Abn. Bde during my tour of duty in the
Republic of South Vietnam. I am specially proud to have served as a
combat medic with the men of 3/503rd Battalion, Recon Platoon.

PFC Gaspar Otero , Jan.
1970
(This picture was taken 3
weeks before leaving for Vietnam)
"I was that which others did
not want to be. I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed
to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted
the thought of eternal loneliness...should I fail. I have seen the face of
terror; felt the stinging cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a
moment's love. I have cried, pained, and hoped...but most of all, I have
lived times others would say were best forgotten. At least someday I will be
able to say that I was proud of what I was...a Sky Soldier."

"TO THE MEDICS AND CORPSMEN"
We got into the fight
the other day and I've got a few things to say, not a second too late the
Medic/Corpsmen came. The Medic/Corpsmen eased my pain and calmed my fear and
in his eyes I thought I saw a tear. For what it was this man, no matter
where or when, he won't be late, its to him this poem I dedicate. I've never
seen a Medic/Corpsmen run from mortar, rocket or machine gun fire. He"ll
stay by the wounded side and he"ll take it all in stride. He tends to the
wounded as best he can, in this land of Vietnam. God bless the
Medic/Corpsmen for the job they did, they saved me once and may save you.
